Close racing in good winds

Last Sunday morning 14 March saw a return to regular racing on Lake Hume, with Albury Wodonga Yacht Club (AWYC) holding a full three race program in moderate to light winds.

The first race, Heat 11 of the prestigious Commodore Trophy, saw “Pisces”, skippered by Terry Caldwell, lead the way across the line from Phil Clements on “Rum Runner” second and “Mondial”, skippered by Mark Harris. The excellent conditions of good breeze and flat water saw some fast, exciting and willing racing!

This was followed by Heat 10 of the Club Championships, with “Rum Runner” in the Trailable Yachts turning the tables on “Pisces” to win this race, followed by Herman van Ree on “Executive Suite”. Wes Ward on “The Grey Ghost” won the off-the-beach division. In the handicap section, John Landon on “Sirocco” lead the way from “Rum Runner” and Geoff Stirling on “Live Wire”.

The third race, held in a failing breeze, was the postponed Heat 10 of the Commodore Trophy, which saw the light weather specialists come to the front. This race was won by “Pisces”, followed by “Live Wire” and “Executive Suite”.

Next Sunday 21 March will see the final heats of the Commodore Trophy and Club Championship series for the 2009 - 2010 season. In some of the closets racing in some years, the Commodore race will holds the most interest as five boats are now in the running to fill the top three places in the prestigious event.
